Who Am I? My latest Artist Statement

Tiffany Zal likes to be broad about what she does. But put simply, she’s a maker, and a seller, and sometimes when lucky can combine the two. As an artist, creating jewelry becomes the best of both worlds; art that is practical, wearable, personal, and ultimately art that you live in.

Her line of bike part jewelry is unique in that it embodies something else besides just aesthetic. These pieces are created with re-used bike parts and hardware, giving new life, and a new purpose to old things that might otherwise be wasted. Foraged from Free Cycles, and Home Resource, among other places, this jewelry can be worn with pride. It lends itself to Tiffany’s aesthetic by being rustic, earthy, and a little wabi sabi.

New Necklace Design, and links to all my jewelry info

My latest design, to be shown at the first Friday Show in Bathing Beauties Beads(where I work), is inspired by a honeycomb, but made with upcycled brass hardware in the shapes of hexagons. It hangs from a gold filled chain, and the pendant is made with brass and wire wrapped with base metal wire. Make sure to stop by to see it, and other new creations October 6th 5-8pm!

I'll also be selling in the Univeristy of Montana UC holiday craft show the 5-7th and I'll be at the holiday MADE fair on the 8th!

Project Selvedge Finale; Ecru

My collection was named "ecru", meaning raw and unbleached in French. It's also a search term for a lot of vintage yellowed lace, linens, slips, etc. I was given $100 to spend, out of which I could spend $20 anywhere, and the rest at Selvedge Studio. I was also allowed to use leftover fabric from past challenges(which I took full advantage of). Instructions were to create 3-5 cohesive pieces of clothing(more if you choose) that show who you are as a designer in 2 weeks. Thanks Judy Giordano for documenting the night!

I won crowd favorite, and best overall vibe

Dana rocks a sophisticated look with a paisley sea foam green pencil skirt made from some curtains found at Secret Seconds Thrift Store, with a sheer top made simple to draw attention to the skirt

Janyssa, my star model of this entire adventure, dons a pair of sheer, that's right sheer pants made from the same curtains as Dana's skirt, worn with lace short shorts underneath. On top I made a little sweetheart top bustier with scrap fabric.

I wear an outfit I made especially with my interests in mind; something wearable. I made a simple dress  by using a tank top as a pattern but elongating it, and used part of my "elsewhere" budget on these crocheted birds I found for $8 in a thrift store, which I stitched on.

Stunning Laura gets to wear my favorite outfit. A silk skirt made of a pale pink fabric from Selvedge cut on the bias, with a belt I made myself using my "elsewhere" budget. I was able to get a few strips of leather and some snaps/rivets for just around $10! The top was from my closet.

Mary sports a lace fishtail high-low dress made with the majority of my budget for fabric ($60.00). I dyed it blue; a risk in color choice for me! I also added some pleather elbow patches for flare, made with leftover scraps from Carly's jacket in the last challenge

Above is my leftover fabrics to work with, pinned to my wall; giving me inspiration by mood and pallet
